Get Recent Changes Automatically

Here's a useful trick for keeping up to date with changes to the Wild Geese web site. It adds a news feed of this web site to your email program so that you will automatically be notified of any changes, and be able to read the changed page in your email program.

  1. If you use Outlook Express (sucker):

    • forget it, this useless email reader doesn't support RSS feeds
    • Go to the Thunderbird web site and download Thunderbird, then follow step 2.

  2. If you use Mozilla Thunderbird (very wise):

    • Click on menu item 'Tools', then 'Account Settings'
    • If you don't see an account named 'News & blogs' do this:
      • Click button 'Add account'
      • Select 'RSS News and Blogs' then click 'Next'
      • Leave account name unchanged, click 'Next'
      • Click 'Finish'
    • Select account 'News & blogs', make sure that the box 'Check for new articles' is ticked
    • Click 'Manage subscriptions'
    • Click 'Add'
    • Set the Feed URL to 'http://wildgeese.org.au/cgi/wildgeese.py?rss=RecentChanges'
    • Optionally tick the box titled 'Show the article summary' (I think this works better than showing the whole page)
    • Click OK. This should download the most recently changed pages from the web site

  3. If you use another email program you may be able to add newsfeeds, also known as RSS feeds, in which case step 2 above will hopefully give you the idea.

  4. If you install an RSS feed reader program you can set it to read feeds from 'http://wildgeese.org.au/cgi/wildgeese.py?rss=RecentChanges'. Your program should explain how to do this. Note that the XML button at the bottom of every page also links to the same URL, this is a standard for any site that supports RSS.

  5. If you browse the internet with Mozilla Firefox you can get Live Bookmarks, an excellent way to keep track of changes to the site. The Firefox browser beats Internet Explorer in other ways too, with tabbed browsing one of the main advantages.
